DEAR NEPHEW,

I am writing this just before they take me to the hospital. They keep saying it will only be for a few days. Rest. Observation. Quiet rooms with doors that behave like doors.

If you are reading this, then I did not come back. It must mean I am gone.

I am sorry. I need you to believe that, even if you believe nothing else I wrote. I am so terribly sorry.

I found the building's secret. Not something hidden inside it—the secret of the building itself. The plans are wrong. The stairwells do not add up. Pipes return from rooms that have never existed. At night I can hear the floors turning around one another, slowly, carefully, like teeth testing their bite.

They told me I was measuring badly. Then the walls began correcting my numbers.

Now that you are in here, it will not let you leave until you finish it.

Do not ask me what it is. I tried to name it once. For three nights something inside the plaster whispered the name back in my own voice.

Follow what repeats. Distrust anything straight. If the room begins to make sense, you are getting close—or it is getting close to you.

I know how this sounds. I can hear myself laughing as I type it, but I am not laughing. There is someone laughing in the room below me. There is no room below me.

The relay cabinet was supposed to be dead. According to the building plans it once carried decimal test pulses between the lift controller, boiler regulator, fire panel, and roof antenna. The whole system was retired in 1987.

It still clicks after midnight.

I traced five removable modules inside the cabinet. Their labels survive, but every cable tag has been scraped clean and two modules were mounted backwards. The continuity report is the last stable arrangement I managed to record before the paths shifted again.

The pulses do not come from any listed controller. Some identify floors that do not exist. One returns from below the basement with less delay than the wire itself should permit.

When the five modules were restored to their stable path, a pale mark burned into the diagnostic glass. I copied it. I do not remember drawing the small numeral beneath it.

I found the memory spool behind the lift controller, although the controller has no socket for it. The service manual calls these records “route memory”: short chains used to remember which floor requested the car and which systems acknowledged it.

This one has survived every scrub. It keeps rebuilding itself from damaged sectors, mixed among convincing diagnostic fragments.

The recovered text is not a lift route. It describes the apartment—door, desk, bed, window—then repeats them in a different order. Each reconstruction changes one detail. Last night it added the bathroom before I installed the wall.

I isolated the twelve remaining sectors. If the complete five-sector record is reconstructed according to protocol 6-B, the diagnostic field should become visible again. That is where I first saw the mark with three strokes beneath it.

Whatever wrote this was remembering the room before the room existed.
